Species of the Day – Wolverine (Gulo gulo)

Wolverine is the largest land-dwelling species of the family Mustelidae (weasels), known for it’s reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times its size.

Wolverine has a circumpolar distribution, corresponding with the Boreal zone of the northern hemisphere in countries like Canada; China; Finland; ; Norway; Russian Federation; Sweden & United States.

Wolverine are Globally listed as Least Concerned but are declared Vulnerable in Europe because it still faces threats such as over-exploitation through hunting and trapping, predator poisoning programs and habitat resource extraction that has caused wolverines to became extinct from much of their historical range. Governments across the wolverine range must enact legislation, introduce measures to reduce man-beast conflicts and promote effective management programs that would ensure long term conservation of the specie and it’s return across the northern wilderness.
